Legacy Legumes
FARM Center's focus on community food security has long included the introduced and often maligned kiawe. That work is now a book. Neil Logan's Legacy Legumes: Trees of Renewal and Abundance is the natural and cultural history of the mesquite, from coastal Peru to Hawai'i, closing with a practical framework for using leguminous trees to rebuild soil, feed people and cool the climate.
Published December 2026, with a foreword by Gary Paul Nabhan.
AgroforestryX Design Tool
The AgroforestryX Design Tool assists you in transforming regenerative agroforestry vision into design. With roots in the indigenous agricultural systems of Pacific Islands and tropical world, the AgroforestryX Design Tool helps people who are aware of the benefits of agroforestry and would like to customize an agroforest for their particular site and goals in an easy-to-follow framework. This tool was developed in consultation with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) under an ongoing Conservation Innovation Grant, in partnership with Permanent Agriculture Resources.
Multi-Strata Agroforestry Trainings
FARM Center runs hands-on trainings in multi-strata agroforestry on the farm in Kapa'au, alongside monthly gatherings. In 2027 the trainings become an immersion. Two six-week programs run from January 18 to April 18, twelve weeks in total. Session I works the wet-side agroforest while the rains run. Session II shifts the weight to arid strategy, with more days out on the leeward coast among the kiawe and the living firebreaks.
